German e-Health Firm Goes to Silicon Valley

Two weeks ago, Marston Alfred and I sat down to talk about SugarStats.com, Health 2.0, and the state of HIT in the US and Europe. That interview appeared on The Health Care Blog - read it here.

In addition to waxing philosophical about living well with chronic illness, we agreed on two major points:

1. Amsterdam has a frightening number of tech startups (we need more HIT startups though), and you don’t have to live down in the valley to succeed in tech…

2. European and American healthcare/wellness web and tech firms need to collaborate MORE - often one continent remains startlingly ignorant of developments (which often run along nearly identical R&D tracks) happening in the other region.

This is problematic because firms on both land masses end up reinventing the wheel. Divided we will most definitely fall.

Finally a European e-health firm has jumped stateside.

ICW, a German concern, formed ICW Labs, a startup that will “expand the ICW eHealth solution set.”

They’ve hired founding Director of SAP Labs India, Thomas Odenwald, who worked with the semantic web, RFID tech, and other tech applications of increasing interest to the healthcare and wellness industry.

Now let’s see what a serious HIT tech lab can do…

Welcome to the US of A ICW; next, bring friends.
